Become A Force Of Nature

We do not live in a deterministic world ruled by the establishment. We also do not live in a self-governed world. The real world is a combination of these two.

Once you recognize that these opposing forces result in the daily realities of sometimes being able to make a difference and sometimes being trapped in the system, you can increase your ability to influence your side of the equation.

What’s your personal mission statement?

An important way to further your progress and impact on the world is to write a personal mission statement. It can make a difference! George Bernard Shaw once said:

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. And also the only real tragedy in life is being used by personally minded men for purposes which you recognize to be base.

Think of it like this—if you don’t have a blueprint, how can you build what you want to build? A mission statement can make the difference in you becoming a force of nature instead of a “feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances!” Remember the old saying, “If you fail to plan, then plan to fail?”

What exactly is a personal mission statement? It is a brief statement of your purpose, including objectives and goals, that keeps you focused. It is about what you want to attain. It is about getting at your intrinsic desires. Writing a personal mission statement is about making a declaration regarding what you are and where you are going.

Are you on track?

The first step is to do a reality check. In the past, when I have asked students to write on the topic, “Where am I,” they freak out. Why? A statement of where you are can be scary once you realize that you had a hand in getting yourself there. People use reality checks to either pat themselves on the back or beat themselves up. A reality check should have neither of these purposes. The “Where am I” question should be about making a statement that reflects how far you’ve come and indicates the direction you are headed.

For example, my reality check might go something like this: “Okay, I am working on my PhD. I feel intellectually challenged. I am stretching and developing. What about the current reality of my relationships? Well, I think they have suffered because of my PhD choice. So I think that I need to…” My mission statement might begin: “I will develop my potential as a person intellectually and relationally…”

Some recommend that you look at occupation, family, community, religion, health, finances, etc. when writing your mission statement. However, I personally find that too overwhelming to deal with. So, I pick two areas of my life that I want to focus on. Then, I try to pick organizations, activities, and other elements that fit into that framework.

Where do you want to be?

Figure out where you want to be. This involves understand the two determining factors: choice and constraint. As I mentioned above, I have always wanted to stretch myself intellectually. I chose to actualize that goal with a PhD program. Does that choice affect the other parts of my mission statement? Yep! I’m afraid so. So, if I want my mission statement to still include relationships, how do I deal with that? My relationships are going to require some attention if I’m going to continue including them in my mission statement.

That’s the simple process in a nutshell. The best part is writing a mission statement can increase your probability of achieving happiness!

Once you create your personal mission statement, you can extend it to include your MLM endeavors. You can search for network marketing organizations that fit your objectives and can provide a vehicle to attaining them. Applying Shaw’s quote, we should choose to be associated with an organization that has a mighty purpose or use for us personally.

Who wants to remain a “feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances?” Write and then live your personal mission statement! Become a force of nature!
